Roll of the Dice

The president took a big chance. And lost. It’s always been his instinct to badger, bully, insult and ignore his enemies. So when Covid-19 appeared earlier this year, he took that same approach. Even though we know from the Bob Woodward book that way back in early February, he knew covid was passed through the air and lethal, he tried to will it away.

His big gamble was that covid would be gone (or at least under control) by the fall and the economy would have started to recover. He really believed in this bet, because he went all-in on his re-election campaign with that wager. And he came up snake eyes.

Covid can’t get to a second wave in the US, because we never extinguished the first wave. At any time, the president could have said “All my MAGA supporters are setting the example by wearing a mask and staying socially distant.” Instead, he has mocked those who follow our own government’s advice, recklessly bringing infections right into the White House. And even after contracting the virus, he hasn’t learned anything. Right back at holding rallies and risking the health of his supporters.

Even if covid was raging, he might have had a chance at reelection if the economy had improved, his gamble has failed. Initial unemployment claims have averaged almost 1 million a week consistently after the huge spike in March.

He doesn’t have much chance to change the narrative of this election. And refusing to debate was the worst possible decision for someone who desperately has to switch things up.

If he loses the election in three weeks, he’ll have his own massive gamble to blame.
